How to choose a Forex broker: 8 checks before you fund an account

A good broker is not defined by the highest leverage or the smallest advertised spread. Start with the legal entity behind the account, then test how it protects money, executes orders, charges fees, and handles withdrawals.

How to choose a crypto exchange: 8 checks before you deposit

The best exchange is not the one with the loudest bonus. It is the platform that fits your country and trading needs while making its risks, costs, and withdrawal rules easy to verify.

Choose the exchange, not the promotion.

The best exchange is not the one with the loudest bonus. It is the platform that fits your country and trading needs while making its risks, costs, and withdrawal rules easy to verify.

The MyProfitFactor rule No exchange removes risk. Score the platform, test it with a small amount, keep only working capital online, and use self-custody for longer-term holdings only if you can manage keys safely.

01

Verify legal access and regulatory status

Start with the exact legal entity that will hold your account—not only the global brand. Check its registered country, licence or registration number, and the relevant regulator’s public register. Registration is useful evidence, but it is not a guarantee against loss and may not include deposit insurance.

02

Separate account security from platform security

Account controls should include app-based or phishing-resistant two-factor authentication, device and session management, withdrawal allowlists, and anti-phishing tools. Then assess the operator itself: custody model, incident history, security disclosures, and response procedures. A strong login cannot protect users from a badly managed company.

03

Measure the total cost, not the headline fee

The advertised maker or taker fee is only one layer. Include bid-ask spread, slippage, card or bank charges, currency conversion, network and withdrawal fees, derivatives funding, and liquidation rules. Calculate the cost for the exact transaction size and market you expect to use.

04

Test deposits and withdrawals before scaling

Review supported payment rails, verification requirements, limits, processing times, network selection, destination tags, holds, and fees. Make a small deposit and withdrawal before sending meaningful capital. Crypto transfers are generally irreversible, so verify the address and network carefully.

The MyProfitFactor rule

Comparison without hidden shortcuts.

Do not choose a broker from one headline number. Verify the exact entity, score all eight areas, use a demo account, then test a small live deposit and withdrawal. Keep leverage conservative and save every statement and support conversation.

The 60-second shortlist

Before funding an account, make sure every answer below is clear, current, and documented.

01

Verify the exact legal entity and licence

Check the company that will contract with you, not only the group brand. Match its legal name, licence number, website, contact details, permitted services, and any warnings in the regulator’s register. Regulation reduces some risks; it does not guarantee profits or prevent failure.

02

Understand client-money protections

Read how retail money is held and whether it is segregated from company funds. Compensation schemes, negative-balance protection, custody arrangements, and insolvency treatment differ by entity and country—marketing for another branch may not apply to you.

03

Review execution and conflicts

Labels such as STP, ECN, or market maker do not tell the whole story. Read the execution policy: venues or counterparties, price sources, slippage, requotes, rejected orders, stop handling, and how the broker manages conflicts when it is the counterparty.

04

Calculate the total trading cost

A tight headline spread may exclude commission and financing. Compare spread plus commission, overnight swaps, currency conversion, inactivity charges, data or platform costs, and deposit or withdrawal fees for the pairs, position sizes, and sessions you actually trade.
